Pourtant, le petit homme à la canne et au chapeau melon est loin d'occuper toute la filmographie de Chaplin qui est aussi un grand réalisateur. Il n'est que de citer L'Opinion publique, Monsieur Verdoux ou La Comtesse de Hong-Kong. Charlot efface Chaplin du fait même de son succès précoce auprès du public, au cours des premières années du cinématographe. Mais le talent n'explique pas tout, il faut qu'un personnage rencontre son époque, en dise les vérités et les mensonges. Charlot-Chaplin fut cet homme, dont Cocteau affirmait qu'il était "l'arpenteur du Château de Kafka".
